Hey everyone! You know what I love most about Five for Friday???? The fact that it is Friday!!! To top that off, our Friday is a half day! Even better!
This is Lindsey and I am linking up with Kacey from Doodlebugs Teaching this week to bring you my Five for Friday!
So I have to start with Halloween! Here’s a picture of my own kiddos and my Grandma:)
Halloween day was pretty rainy but luckily it cleared up by trick or treat time. We always head up to my mom and dad’s house to do our trick or treating. Normally, we only go to the neighbors that we know, get a couple pieces of candy, and head back. Well, this year we decided we’d hit a few more houses. We went to two neighbors houses. Then we went to our third house. Everything was great. Em went up and rang the bell. We waited…and waited. Lights on, halloween decorations up. So she rang again. Then it happened. This guy answered the door in a scary wolf mask and growled. T.H.E E.N.D. Em ran, screaming, away from the house and that was it. She is now scarred for life. Way to go guy in wolf mask. The guy did feel really bad. She got extra candy. But still…she’s over it.
I wait for two things this time of year and you know what?!?!?!? They are HERE!!
Red Starbucks cups and candy cane kisses!! Have you had candy cane kisses????? SO GOOD! Seriously, if you eat them you will not be able to stop. They are the most delicious thing!! I love, love, love this time of year!
We’ve been in school for two months now and I am finally starting to feel like we are getting things done. This week, I was finally able to start my guided reading groups. I LOVE reading groups! I feel like it’s the only way I really get to know my kiddos as readers AND I LOVE to watch the growth that they make. This year I am even more excited because our passages are finished and they are GREAT for groups. I have started combining my resources.
So with this group, we read the Reading A-Z book Fall. Then we used our Fall passage set to learn more about the season and vocabulary. I love that these work so well together! In this picture they are highlighting their vocabulary words.
Here are their passages on day 2 where they are working on highlighting information to answer the text dependent questions. Let me tell you…add highlighters and it automatically becomes fun and interesting!!
The other thing we finally got up and going was our daily fluency practice. We use the Six Minute Solution program, but this year I am going to mix it up a little bit to make it a little more interesting.
When we start out, we all have the same passage. We are just working on the concept of marking mistakes and reporting scores. Next week we are going to start using these…
I am IN LOVE with these super-cute fluency sticks and I am so excited for the kiddos to use them!!
This morning I had a mommy freak out time! My little girl, who’s 4 and has been sick only once in her life, woke up and could barely talk. She was wheezy and yucky and it was scary! Welcome to an unexpected sick day! Our school district is having a severe sub shortage. Basically, if you are taking an unexpected sick day you will most likely not have a sub. So the school has to start pulling our support teachers to sub for us. BUT, I am LUCKY because my MOM is a support teacher so SHE got to be my sub!! YAY! Do you know how much easier it is to take that sick day when your momma is going to be taking your place?!?!?! SO much easier to focus on my baby girl:)
We rushed to the clinic where they made her wear this mask. NOT HAPPY (in case you couldn’t tell). But it turned out to just be a virus causing laryngitis, fever and a stuffy nose. PHEW!
I hope you all have a fantastic weekend!!!!!

I noticed us Washington gals were so fast on the Five for Friday this week! First two to link up! 🙂
We also both have the infamous red cups gracing our posts! I love when the red cups are released – it makes me think Christmas is here! So festive and fun.
I love that I can pull groups during reading now too! It makes me feel so much more productive and I feel like I can finally get things going and individualized.
That is awesome that your mom could sub for you! Aren't moms the best??
Happy Friday to you!

I don't feel like my schedule is normal until I can start pulling groups. I feel like we are actually accomplishing something now!
We were thinking about trying to do a WA blogger meet up in January or February. Will keep you posted:)

I love the look on your daughter's face! I am thinking she didn't want her picture made while wearing that mask! Hope she feels better soon! One day soon I am going to retire and sub just for the school at which I currently teach. I hope my teacher friends can call on me in emergencies like you did with your mom! Have a great weekend!

Thank you! She is definitely feeling better now, finally! I am sure your teacher friends will have you sub for them. It is SO much easier when you have a substitute who knows all the schools routines and procedures! I hope your weekend was great!
