I am thinking about running my literacy centers like you. What I am wondering is if you also do small reading groups at the same time and if so how do you plug those in as the kids works at their centers?

Aw! Thank you! I think every teacher feels that way! I sure do! This just works well for my kiddos and when you see the growth you know you’re doing something right. Keep on being you and doing what works for your kiddos!

Hi Lindsay!

Yes, I do an hour of guided reading during this time. We have a lot of reading support at our school so my kiddos are going in and out to different groups as well as to my own groups. I also hold a 20 minute group first thing in the morning. All of my other students are doing an entry task, which is currently a different writing prompt each day. Hope that helps!

Hi Lindsay,
I am so glad I found your blog and am excited about incorporating a lot of your ideas. I do have a quick question about your daily schedule. I'm just wondering when you do guided reading? Do you do guided reading during these times as well or another part of your day? And if you do guided reading at another time, what kinds of activities do your students do when you are with the small group? Thanks, Lindsay

Hello! I actually have mixed levels within the groups. I do that so that they aren’t all using the same materials, so I don’t need to provide as many copies, and so that they can help each other. I find that having higher levels mixed with lower levels allows them to work together and help each other a little more. I’m so glad you find it useful!!!

I was wondering on your board when you have the students names displayed are they grouped by their reading level? Thanks for all of this! This is going to change my reading block so much for my first graders!

Hello:)

I don't have a written copy of my schedule. We have three 20 minute rotations. The class is divided into three groups. The groups rotate through the centers, one per day. They also read to self and complete a readers response for one of the rotations and partner read or use technology for the third rotation.
